BAC New Zealand - 2015

February 24 - Last Day in Queenstown

This morning, Ann and I slept in. Then we walked to a recommended cafe called Vudu for our excellent French toast, bacon and baked banana. The coffee was good, too.

Then we took a walk through the Queenstown Gardens. It was a nice stroll in perfect weather.

Lunch was at Vudu's second location. I had a falafel salad with spinach quinoa and pickled carrots. Ann had a pork pie.

We managed to relax for a while, reading our email and checking in for our flight tomorrow. Dinner was at Captains Restaurant where Ann had lamb cutlets and a salad. I had risotto with peas and monkfish. Ice cream was next at Patagonia Chocolates.

t was interesting for me to read the Wikipedia description of Queenstown. It is a resort town in Otago in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island. "It is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu, a long thin Z-shaped lake formed by glacial processes, and has spectacular views of nearby mountains such as The Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Walter Peak and just above the town; Ben Lomond and Queenstown Hill. Queenstown has an urban population of 12,500 (June 2014 estimate)....". To us, it had the feel of a small town. We also felt that we were the oldest people in town. It seemed that the vast majority of people we saw were under 30. This boosts Queenstown's reputation for adventure tourism. Many of the storefronts that we walked past advertised skiing and snowboarding, jet boating, whitewater rafting, bungy jumping, mountain biking, skateboarding, tramping, paragliding, sky diving, fly fishing, hiking, helicopter sight-seeing and more. Our hotel, the Pinewood Lodge caters to the younger crowd with its many dormitory units and shared kitchens. We had a basic standard room with its own bathroom.

Here are some photos from our walk around town. Click on them to get a larger image.

February 25 - Back to Home

We were up early and walked to Bob's Weigh for breakfast. Then Super Shuttle picked us up at the lodge and took us to the airport. We had slight delays because of a fierce rainstorm that rolled through, but we made it in time to Auckland for our flight home. It was a very long day because we had to make up for the 21 hours that we missed on the way to New Zealand.
