May 17 - Madrid to Avignon

We were up early to miss the crowd at breakfast. Our train was due to leave at 1:30, so we had some time to kill. We walked around our area to stretch our legs and to see some of the sights that we had missed. We went into La Mallorquinato get some snacks for our trip to Avignon. This is a wonderful confiteria having dozens of different kinds of pastry. There is a room upstairs for those who want to sit down and order coffee with their treats. We ordered pastry to go.

At 11:00, we checked out of Hotel Moderno , walked our bags over to the Metro station and rode to the train station. We were able to find a place on board our train for our luggage on the way to finding our first class seats. It was a comfortable trip although we were riding backwards. The food in the cafe car was awful but we ate it for fuel. For some unknown reason, we had to change trains in Barcelona. This was a minor problem because the train we changed to had the identical configuration as the one we left. And it was directly across the platform.

When we arrived at the Avignon TGV station after a seven-hour train ride, we had prepaid tickets for the short train ride into the city. It was so late that we decided to take a taxi instead of waiting for the train. The cab ride was less expensive than our train tickets and the driver was very friendly.

We checked into Hotel de l'Horloge and immediately went to dinner across the main square from our hotel at the Opera Cafe. Ann had lamb shanks and I had duck breast. We were really hungry after the train ride with awful cafeteria food to eat. Bed time was after midnight.
