Europe 2015

May 18 - Avignon

Hotel l'Horloge has a wonderful breakfast buffet. It had lots of fresh fruit and eggs along with breads, cereals, coffee, etc. The croissants were French flakey made with butter. There was a machine where we could squeeze oranges for our juice. I was happy.

After breakfast we walked a short distance to The Popes Palace which is the major attraction in Avignon. We paid our entry fee and picked up audio guides. The tour took us through many rooms. Most of them were bare. Some had frescos with scenes of historic events. Views from the walls and towers were spectacular. According to its website, "Construction was started in 1335 and completed in less than twenty years under the leadership of two builder popes, Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI. The Popes’ Palace is the biggest Gothic palace in all of Europe (15,000 m2 of floor space, which is the equivalent of 4 Gothic cathedrals)".

After the palace tour, we walked back to the Place de l'Horlogefor lunch. Eating outside on the square at the Opera Cafe, Ann had chicken and a cheese plate. I had smoked salmon and a French traditional steak with fries.

After lunch we walked to Pont d'Avignon to see the view of the palace from the end of the bridge. From there we climbed through a tower with a few hundred steps to gardens above the palace. It was getting pretty warm so we meandered back to our room for some downtime.

Dinner was on a side street away from the touristy square at Vent d'Anges which we found on TripAdvisor. (We are using TripAdvisor to peruse restaurants instead of Rick Steves. We don't have his guide book for France). Ann had a really good vegetarian pie while I had a hamburger. Afterward, we stopped for ice cream.
